Doing some work on character models and thought I would share a quick pict. I am going to put the Master of Recruits into my 10th company list and fluff wise Master of the Arsenal is the leader of the 3rd Battle Company. So they may see the field some day. Right now it is just painting fun.
This is my motivation blog for my 40k. Current projects include Imperial Fists and Steal Legion

Project: Imperial Fists, chaplain v2 day 2
So the chaplain is coming along. The base colors are done and ink washes are applied. All the highlighting and detail are next. Looking at him this morning I need to gun metal the intake jets. I am really happy with the Crozius handle the red came out great.
Painting black is always a process of cleanup. I started with white primer as light under coat. I find it helps pick out details, like the grenade under his arm. Would have never seen that had I started with a black under coat.
Being mostly black I will be relying mostly on lining to do highlighting. my current technique is too use a strong light source from above and paint the places where light strike the model. The secret is use a strong light.

10 minute Eldar Test Results
Ok a layer of Mechrite Red fix the pink problem. So after three tests the 10 min process seems to work well. Green is still winning for the army color, so I may be going Biel Tan. Aspect warriors also be done this way. I should start looking at ~750 point lists.
Right now it is looking like:
Farseer
10 Guardians w/StarCannon and Warlock
5 Pathfinders
10 Dire Avengers w/Exarch and Wave Serpent
1 War Walker w/Scatterlasers
Something like that.
Eldar: More paint tests
More 10 min Eldar tests. Working out color. The Gnarls Green (P3) worked well as did the Cygnar Blue (p3). The Gore Red came out too pink, I am going to need to do some more Red testing for Fire Dragons and Warpspiders. The green is leading the way for Guardians squads and tanks, but I am not done with paint tests yet. My goal is to find a color scheme that less clown like but still has the codex look.

10 minute Eldar Biel Tan Test
So you need a Eldar Guardian and you only have 10mins... well I have the answer. I am doing some paint test for my upcoming Eldar army and I stumbled across this really quick process. Basically it is a two color prime and a wash.
- Prime black
- Spay white from the top
- Wash the whole model with 3:1 dark green
After some very quick detail work.

On the Bench: Taking a break from projects

The last couple of weeks have been very productive. So tonight I took a break from yellow and painted something different. This is an old preacher with eviscerator that I am using in my Inquisitor squad (it is an on hold project). The process I use to paint one-offs is so much different than painting armies. Plus I needed to work on my brush control. He is still a work in progress but I can say my blending isn't totally lost.
Not total sure about the color combo, but we'll see if it grows on me. There are still details to paint in, like trim around the robe and another highlight on the weapon. I may paint another character before going back to the fists.

Project Status - Imperial Fists Full 3rd Battle Company

Here is a state of the project for Imperial Fists 3rd Company. Yes I am building the whole battle company. After looking at it I am not that far off. It was kinda a wild off in the future statement when it was suggested, but now I can see it coming together.
A tip of my hat to paintedpotato over at dakkadakka who has already completed a Imperial Fists Full Battle Company.

Project: Imperial Fists, Assault Squad
I finished up weathering and details on the Space Marine Assault Squad. The helmets turned out good, although they do kinda look like a football team.
The weathering on the jump packs turned out great. I had to dry brush some Chaos Black to get the scorch marks dark enough. You may wounder why only 8 Marine, the reason is to keep them down around 200 points. I found that the durability of 8 vs. 10 is not that great and keeping them around 200 means I can field this squad in a 750 point game.

Project: Imperial Fists, Chaplin
Over all I love the results. It is harder to work with being alcohol based. It drys fast if you put it on a pallet so you have to work quick or paint out of the bottle. The pigment settles fast and you have to keep shaking it back up.
edit: by the way.. this is totally a work in progress, lots of detail work and clean up. But, for a couple of hours work while bases dried... I am happy. enjoy

Project: Imperial Fists, Time vs. Result
After looking at my test paint squad for a couple of weeks, I came to the conclusion I wasn't happy with the fast paint job. The level of detail I had put into them was poor. While painting round 2 I have brought the level of painting up a bit and fix some of the things that annoyed me looking at the test paint squad. The results is I am happy with the 5 new marines I just finished and the project as a whole has slowed down.
So after spending more time cleaning mold lines, painting lenses, cleaning over paint and a whole new method of bases, here is the result:
I am happier with the result, but it will take more like 3-4 hours + drying time per-marine instead of 1-2. For example, the base now requires 3 drying cycles instead of one and they wash is now painted on to where I want it instead of all over, all of this takes time. With painting time being precious as a working Dad, it is going to take a while before I am on to my next project. However, I am much more proud of my army... lesson learned.

Project: Imperial Fists, Space Marine Quick Zenithal Highlighting
My goal with the Imperial Fists is a table quality army without putting in a great deal of time. The idea is to have a good looking army and still be able to finish a squad in 6-8 man-hours. I want my marines to look as if they have come out of battle, grimy worn used troops and tanks. Imperial Fists are siege fighters and siege fighting is a dirty business. In phase one I'll talk about how to get quick zenithal highlighting and base coat using the airbrush.
Quick Zenithal Highlights using an Airbrush
I got the idea from this great article from Philippe Villé written in back in September 2008 adn from Les at awesomepaintjob.com. Basically just use the airbrush as the light source.
Step 1: Prime
Prime the model white. I use the airbrush to prime my minis . It give me more control and better results. I have a paint are set up on my workbench so I can prime right there. Here is the mix I use.
- 1 part: Reaper Brush-on Primer
- 1 part: Liquitex Airbrush Medium
- Clean up with Windex
One note is that this mix is very thin. When airbrushing it on it is very important to work slow and do not let it collect. Let the primer dry for 24 hours (8 would work, but 24 is better).

Step 2: Base Coat
I base coat the whole mini Plague Brown (GW equivalent Bubonic Brown) which is the color of yellow shadow, I know it is brown, but there you go. What I am doing is painting the shadow first. Cover the whole model. You can let the base color dry or paint the highlight right away, it doesn't seem to matter.
- 2 parts Vallejo Game Color Plague Brown (GW equivalent Bubonic Brown)
- 1 part Windex
I have found that Vallejo Game Colors airbrush nicely with a minimum amount of thinning. To clean up I clean the color cup in water and run two color cups of Windex through the brush. You will still need to do a full disassemble and clean once in a while, but that works between colors.

Step 3: Highlights
Here is the magic. Hold the mini so that the top is facing the airbrush. Now just paint the highlight color, in this case Vallejo Game Color Sun Blast Yellow (GW equivalent Sunburst Yellow), from the top of the model. You will notice that the calves of the space marine don't get hit with the highlight color. Angle the model just enough to so that the highlight color hit the part of the calf. This is how I judge angle while painting.
- 2 Part Vallejo Game Color Sun Blast Yellow (GW equivalent Sunburst Yellow)
- 1 Windex
As you can see below the shadow should be 100% Plague Brown and the highlight should be 100% Bald Moon Yellow. In between is a gradient between the two, the same way blending would create.

From straight on the model doesn't seem dramatically highlighted. However when you look at them on the table it makes a big difference.

Any area of the model that are not lit from above will remain Plague Brown and very edges can now be highlighted further with bleach bone.

From this step the next will be adding detail color, basing and weathering. I'll cover those in the next post. Happy Painting!
